To Lose Weight, Spend 45 Minutes in the Kitchen, Not the Gym

One of the most important eating habits you can adopt is to start cooking your own meals. Home made food has less calories, less fat, and less sodium than anything store bought or eaten in a restaurant. If you don’t have enough time to cook, but you do wake up early to exercise, you are making a mistake! If you are scratching your head in disbelief, consider that obesity has sharply increased in the last 3 decades, but overall there has been very little change in physical activity levels in Western nations. This, despite what popular media (and soft drink manufacturers) want you to believe. This means that the reason people are gaining weight is that they are consuming more calories than they did a generation ago. While it’s true that exercise has many health benefits beyond weight loss, if you have only 45 minutes a day to spare, choose your kitchen, not the gym. This should be a no-brainer simply because a poor diet generates more disease than than physical inactivity, alcohol and smoking combined. Improving your food outweighs the benefits of exercise. All this is not to say that exercise isn’t important. In fact, exercise can help reduce the risk of many health issues, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia and some cancers. However, exercise DOES NOT promote weight loss, and its benefits are negated by a nutrient poor, calorie rich junk food diet.
