Stay Away from Quest’s Latest Blueberry Muffin “Stud Muffin” Bar

Fooducate

Quest Nutrition is a very popular bar in dieting circles as it seems to have cracked the secret to success – it tastes good, is packed with protein and fiber, and is very low in sugar and fats. The latest addition to the bar family is a blueberry muffin flavor, which has been launched with a comic music clip. At first look, the bar seems promising: it has 190 calories, but 84 are from 22 grams of protein, 56 are 14 grams of fiber (which means they won’t really be digested), and only 60 are from fat. It seems too good to be true, until you read the ingredient list:

Protein Blend (Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate), Soluble Corn Fiber (Prebiotic Fiber), Almonds, Water, Erythritol, Dried Blueberries, Palm Kernel Oil, Natural Flavors, Cocoa Butter, Sea Salt, Cinnamon, Sucralose, Baking Soda, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Steviol Glycosides (Stevia).

Whey protein isolate and milk protein isolate are a byproduct of cheese production. Body builders buy them in powdered form to add to food and drink. They may sometimes cause digestive problems such as bloating, cramps, and gas.

The soluble corn fiber is the main source of fiber in this bar, not the miniscule amount of dried blueberries. It is derived through enzymatic reaction with corn starch, and may cause bloating in the amounts used here. In the past, Quest was sued for using another fake fiber family called isomalto-oligosaccharides. Two zero calorie sweeteners are used here – stevia and sucralose(which is bad). . Bottom line: Stay away. This bar is engineered to taste good and look like a nutrition powerhouse. In fact, it is a highly processed food-like product that we would not recommend eating.

KISS Fact:  This is exactly the reason we tell our patients to READ the ingredients not the nutritional information.   Nutrition is big business and companies will say and do just about anything to sell you their “real, natural” products.  If you can not pronounce an ingredient, you shouldn’t eat it.  Our office has done many workshops on this very topic.  If the label doesn’t say 100% natural, is not 100% natural.  All natural can just mean a little part of the ingredients are natural.  Don’t buy into their tricks and gimmicks.  Be educated on the topic, you health depends on it!
