Brussels Sprouts for Comfort Food Anyone?

Hey Guys!

As we are nearing the end of September, all I can think about is fall weather, fall fashion, and fall food. Now, when I say fall food I bet some of you are wondering what I’m talking about. Fall food can fall anywhere between pumpkin spiced everything to thanksgiving food. What I wanted to talk about today is something we all know and love; comfort food! I think comfort food is eaten all year round, but as we get into the holidays and cold season is can be wanted even more. I found this article that talks about the comfort foods we are known to usually want and how we can use more nutritious foods to fall into this category. I don’t know how many of you would want to pick Brussels sprouts over mac n cheese when you are craving comfort foods, but chef, Brian Sullivan, discusses how we should focus on updating comfort foods that can meet that feeling, but offer better nutrients and tend to not be so heavy. I love that he talks about this because between the cold season and the holidays we often find ourselves not only eating more food, but foods that can cause us to get off track of our goals and what our body needs. This is why vitamin deficiencies and weight gain can be more common during this season. Brian talks about replacing heavy starch foods with warm sweet potato mash, polenta, or grits that offer that comfort desire without being so heavy and can be made to offer a better source of nutrients. I will leave the article for you guys to read, and I hope it helps you think about a better source of “comfort” food the next time you’re in the mood. It’s time to update this trend so that way we can be on the right track all year round!
