Artificial Sweeteners and Kids: Not a Healthy Combination

The use of artificial sweeteners has skyrocketed in the last 2 decades, as people are seeking a way to reduce calorie intake while still enjoying soft drinks and other sweet foods. Findings from a recent study by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are quite alarming:

  1. As of 2012, 40 percent of adults and 25 percent of children reported that they consume low calorie sweeteners (mostly made up of artificial sweeteners)

  2. For kids, this is an increase of 200 percent in less than 15 years

  3. Women use low calorie sweeteners more often than men

  4. Use of low calorie sweeteners increases with weight.

  5. As it pertains to aspartame (Nutrasweet), one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners in the world, 3 independent rodent studies in 2005, 2007, and 2010 found that aspartame causes lymphomas, leukemias, and other tumors. Exposure during gestation and in early life was especially dangerous. The FDA refutes the findings of these studies. Other issues worth considering when it comes to artificial sweeteners:

  6. Their effect on gut bacteria – studies have shown that artificial sweeteners induce glucose intolerance by altering the microbiome.

  7. They confuse the body by creating a dissociation between the sweet taste and actual calorie intake. This anomaly may put various regulatory systems, controlling hunger and body weight, out of sync. In other words, say good-bye to your weight loss. A study on rodents showed that rats fed saccharin actually gained weight compared to those fed sucrose (table sugar).

  8. They infantalize our sense of taste – Artificial sweeteners are a hundredfold sweeter than sucrose. When our taste buds get used to such high levels of sweet, standard sugary flavors, of fruit, for example, become bland. Other healthful foods such as grains and vegetables become less appealing. This ultimately leads to a poor diet of highly processed foods instead of whole foods.

  9. Bottom line: Aim for less sweeteners in your kids’ food and beverages, full or low calorie.
