A Good Change Doesn’t Always Mean Good Quality

How is everyone’s week going? I wanted to share with you an article that I found about McDonald’s latest food changes. I think that it really shows how fast food is making changes to the food to try and change the perception about it’s nutrition. However, these changes are not really changing the quality or nutrition value of the food. Dr Mercola’s article explains this through some of the specific changes McDonald’s is making and how  marketing is getting its consumers on board. Here are some of the specific changes being made today.

Antibiotic use in Chickens

However, in small print, at the bottom of the press release, is this statement:

“Farmers still use ionophores, a class of antibiotics that are not prescribed to people, to help keep chickens healthy.”

The use of Butter and Eggs

“These are small steps in the right direction; however, neither the butter nor the eggsare sourced from organic, free-range animals. Not all butter and eggs are created equally.”

Using Sugar instead of HFCS

“The switch to sugar in their buns will not appreciably reduce the overall grams of carbohydrates in the product or the number of calories. While removing HFCS is a healthier choice, it is only slightly healthier as the product continues to spike your insulin, increase your risk for weight gain and increase the inflammatory process in your body.“‘

“While McDonald’s is attempting to change perception by making small improvements to their food supply and remodeling their restaurants, it hasn’t changed the carbohydrate count, calories or lack of nutritional value in the food served. Your best bet continues to be eating real whole food.”

I thought this article was really good to read because often we can see certain changes in fast food chains, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is okay to eat. While these changes are good small steps we cannot rely on McDonald’s to provide us with the nutrient we need on a daily basis. When we are making food that we know the ingredients and know where it came from it allows us to be in control of our health and nutrition. That is the kind of change that can make a true impact!
